What is LASER and How Does It Work?

LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.   A LASER is a device which generates an intense beam of light.  The Carbon Dioxide Laser produces an invisible beam which heats and vaporizes tissue almost instantaneously.  That is done so precisely that normal surrounding tissues are hardly affected.

Common Questions about LASER Surgery

bulletIs LASER Surgery a New Technique?

No, LASERS have been used in surgery for more than 20 years. bulletWhat is a LASER Used for?

There are many uses for LASERS.   Several routine surgeries, including spays and neuters can also be performed with the LASER.  The LASER works extremely well in declawing and the removal of many tumors by reducing swelling, blood loss and pain. bulletIs the LASER like X-RAY?

No.  There is no ionizing radiation present in the LASER.

bulletDoes It Hurt?

Studies report that there is less pain during and after LASER surgery.   Before using LASER, your veterinarian may choose to sedate or anesthetize your pet.

bulletWhat are the Advantages to LASER Treatment?

When using the LASER it is frequently possible to complete a treatment in one visit which might otherwise require additional visits or even hospitalization.   The after-affects of treatments, such as pain, swelling, and drainage, are usually much less.

bulletDoes Pregnancy preclude LASER Surgery?

No. In fact, the LASER allows some conditions, which could not be safely treated in other ways, to be treated during your animal's pregnancy.

bulletHow do I care for the Treated Area?

Since the LASER is used to treat many different conditions in many different areas of the body, your veterinarian will give you instructions about the after-care for your pet's individual case.

Advantages of LASER

VIRTUALLY PAINLESS
The LASER  seals nerve endings, reducing post-operative pain.   The LASER also seals lymphatic tissue, which reduces swelling.   The healing is more comfortable!
LESS BLEEDING
The LASER shrinks small blood vessels, considerably reducing bleeding.
REDUCES INFECTIONS
The LASER sterilizes as it lases, and does not touch the tissue.
SAVES TIME & MONEY
The LASER allows many procedures to be done under local anesthesia.   This may reduce the use of general anesthesia, thus reducing the risk and possibly an overnight stay.
LESS SCARRING
The LASER only destroys abnormal tissue and does not damage normal tissue.  It allows normal, gentle healing with little or no scarring.

Many procedures can be done in our office while you wait, without having to bring your pet back for surgery and an overnight stay.  This will save you a lot of time.

Our desire is to provide your pet the best health care in the Seaford area, combining the latest advances in medical procedures with a personal commitment to your pet's health.
